Drag & Drop

Introduction

Drag and drop is one of the fastest ways to reorganize work in Colonnes.

You can use it to:

move items within Columns
move items between spaces
schedule items in Calendar
place scheduled items back into the hierarchy
create items by dragging a type from the toolbar
apply a type, color, or tag by dropping onto a toolbar button
duplicate items while dragging

Dragging in Columns

In Columns, dragging changes an item’s place in the hierarchy.

You can drop:

before an item
after an item
into an item that can accept children
into an empty column surface
onto a space in the sidebar

If you drop into a task, heading, or text item, Colonnes can convert that target into a folder so it can contain children. Separators cannot contain children.

If you drop an item onto a different space, Colonnes moves it to that space, places it at the end, switches to that space, and selects the moved item.

Dragging in Calendar

In Calendar, dragging moves scheduled items within the same day or to another visible day.

You can drop:

before an item
after an item
onto an empty day surface

When you drag from Columns to Calendar, Colonnes schedules the selected items on the target day. The items keep their place in Columns, so they can appear in both views at the same time.

When you drag from Calendar to Columns, Colonnes gives the scheduled item a place in the hierarchy. The item keeps its schedule, so it can also appear in both views at the same time.

Special Item Behavior

Folders and templates are not scheduled as calendar items themselves.

If you drop a folder on Calendar, Colonnes schedules its schedulable descendants.

If you drop a template on Calendar, Colonnes creates scheduled duplicates from the template content.

The toolbar can act as both a drag source and a drag target.

Types

You can drag a type button from the toolbar into Columns or Calendar to create that type at the drop position.

You can also drag selected items onto a type button to change the dragged items to that type when the change is allowed.

Colors

You can drag a color button from the toolbar onto an item. If the item under the pointer is part of the current selection, the color applies to the selection; otherwise it applies to the item you drop on.

You can also drag selected items onto a color button in the toolbar.

Other Dragging Areas

Drag and drop is also used in some settings screens:

Tags can be reordered by dragging them in Document Settings > Tags.
Conditional formatting rules can be reordered by dragging them in Document Settings > Conditional Formatting.
