Menus, Toolbar & Commands
Colonnes gives you several ways to run the same actions: the toolbar, contextual menus, and the Command Menu.
Use the toolbar when an action is visible and you want to click or drag. Use context menus when you want actions related to the item, column, day, or space under the pointer. Use the Command Menu when you prefer to type, search, or jump directly to a specialized command page.
Toolbar
The toolbar sits at the bottom of the app. It changes with the current context, so the buttons you see depend on whether you are selecting items, editing text, dragging, or viewing help.
The left side contains the application menu and the view toggles:
- Application menu: create, open, or close documents; create from a template; open Application Settings, Print Settings, or Document Settings; check for updates; open help and support.
- Columns and Calendar: show or hide each view. You can display Columns only, Calendar only, or both views together.
The center area contains the floating action menu for the current selection or edit target:
- Actions: edit the selected item, finish editing, create below, create child, or delete.
- Types: turn the selected item into another item type when the change is allowed.
- Colors: apply a direct item color.
- Tags: toggle document tags on taggable items.
The type, color, and tag buttons also work with drag and drop. For the full behavior, see Drag & Drop.
The right side shows the current mode badge and, when help is enabled, buttons for keyboard shortcuts and contextual help.
Context Menu
Right-click to open a context menu. The menu changes depending on what you clicked.
Selection Version
Right-click an item to open the item context menu. This menu is focused on the current item or selected items.
For a single item, it can include:
- Edit
- Type
- Tags
- Colors
- Icon, for folders and templates
- Create Below
- Create Child, when the item can contain children and the focused view is Columns
- Copy, Copy ID, Cut, and Duplicate
- Move commands for top, up, down, and bottom
- Delete
When several items are selected, the context menu focuses on bulk actions such as color, copy, cut, duplicate, move, print, Stack, and delete.
Column Version
In Columns view, the column header has a small menu button. It contains actions for the whole column:
- Launch Stack
- Sort & Cleaning
The Sort & Cleaning submenu can sort unfinished or finished items first, sort alphabetically, sort by created date, sort by modified date, or delete finished items from that column.
Right-clicking the background of a Columns column opens a related surface menu. It can create a new item in the column, print or launch Stack for that column, paste at the end of the column, and use the same Sort & Cleaning actions.
Columns Sidebar Version
The Columns sidebar contains your spaces. Right-click a space button to open the space menu.
On a space button, the menu can copy the space ID or open Edit spaces. Right-clicking the empty background of the sidebar opens the same Edit spaces entry. Edit spaces opens Document Settings with the relevant space selected.

Sidebar Background Version
The empty background below the space buttons is a shortcut to space management. Right-click it and choose Edit spaces when you want to add, rename, reorder, archive, or customize spaces without targeting a specific item.
Column menu
Some menus are opened from a visible button instead of a right-click. Column headers and Calendar day headers use a small button with an ellipsis icon.
Button menus are useful when you want to act on a whole column or day without selecting an item first. They also make the available column or day actions visible for users who do not rely on right-click.
Command Menu
Open the Command Menu with:

The root page lets you search and run commands, open spaces, open recent documents, create or open documents, change selected items, and reach specialized pages such as Search, Move, Schedule, Templates, or Icon selection when those commands are relevant.
When no file is open, the Command Menu only shows document-related actions such as creating, opening, or reopening documents.
Use the keyboard inside command pages:
or moves down. or moves up. runs the selected result. closes the menu.
When you are inside a subpage, Backspace returns to the previous command page if the search field is empty.
Search Menu
Open Search with:
Search is a dedicated page of the Command Menu. It searches visible spaces and items in the current document, shows matches in their hierarchy, and lets you jump directly to a result.
Search results can include:
- Spaces
- Items inside visible spaces
- Scheduled items that only appear in Calendar
- Calendar date roots for scheduled matches
Selecting a space switches Columns to that space. Selecting an item opens its structural context and selects it. Selecting a Calendar result moves Calendar to the matching date and selects the scheduled item.
Archived spaces are not shown in normal Search results.
Move Menu
Open the Move menu with:
The Move menu is a dedicated command page for moving the current selection to another parent. It shows spaces and valid container items as destinations.
Use it when you know where an item belongs but do not want to drag across several columns. Type part of a destination name, select the target, and press Enter to move the selected item or items there.
The Move menu avoids invalid destinations. It does not offer the selected items themselves or descendants that would make a circular hierarchy.
Schedule Menu
Open the Schedule menu with:
Schedule is a dedicated command page for scheduling the current selection. It opens a calendar picker and uses the current Calendar date as the starting point.
You can type a date query, choose a day with the mouse, or use the arrow keys to move the selected day. Left and right move by one day; up and down move by one week. Enter schedules the selection on the highlighted day.
Only schedulable items can be scheduled. If the selection does not contain any schedulable item, the Schedule page shows an empty state instead of applying a date.
